Getting there and Getting about

Airbus A380With regular, inexpensive flights from almost all their international airports, it could hardly be easier to get from the UK and Ireland to Tenerife. The majority of flights to Tenerife are charters serving the needs of the package-holiday industry, but there are some scheduled flights available.   If you're not pushed for time, it may be worth trying for a cheap flight to southern Spain, from where you can catch the weekly ferry from Cádiz to Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Good weather all year round means that there's really no off-season in the Canaries, though fares do go up, and accommodation is harder to find, from May to September and over Christmas and the New Year

There are a variety of websites that will help you  package your holiday, for example www.expedia.co.uk

Flightline  www.flightline.co.uk/  can usually search all the airlines for a cheap flight, but they do not necessarily come up with the cheapest.

There are many Airlines and charter flights available from airports all over the UK  and this website has links to many sources  of cheap flights www.travelguidetenerife.net/tenerife-flights.html

Other Airlines and charters that offer flights include

Car Hire

Hiring a car is not absolutely essential, but it does help you get about and get the best out of the island.   You will find there are plenty of places that offer car hire.   Prices for car hire in Tenerife ranges depending where you go, what type of car you have and the duration of time you hire it for.  Cars are usually around 30-50 Euros per day for your basic models such as Fiestas and Renault Clio’s. Weekly hire can range from 100 to 350 Euros for the same car. Car hire on a monthly basis is reasonable. For a non-air conditioned basic car you are looking at around 400 Euros. With air conditioning you are looking at around 500 Euros. Obviously the bigger the engine the more you will pay.  It is well worth shopping around, although we have found that Auto Reisen mentioned below generally can be the cheapest.

There are several firms offering relatively cheap car hire and it is worth booking it in advance.   Firms like Do you Do Spain  http://www.doyouspain.com/tenerife-car-hire/tenerife-car-hire.htm offer good rates and you can try Alamo, Hertz and who the facility of collection from and return to the airport, but we have had the best deal so far from Auto Reisen  http://www.autoreisen.es/ingles/tenerife_car_hire.phpad

Tenerife Ferries

The well known international Fred Olsen shipping line has operated safe and reliable ferry services between the various Canary Islands for many years. The busier and more important services are very frequent, sometime several times daily.

Services connect Tenerife with the other islands, and most include the usual ferry facilities, including car ferrying. The beautiful island of Gomera can be visited easily in a single day. The crossing is just over one hour and offers a superbly relaxing 'short cruise' both ways.
